A key focus of the presentation is sensomotoric foot orthoses. This approach considers not only biomechanics but also the neurological system and the way people learn movement patterns. Sensomotoric orthoses use the body’s own proprioception and feedback loops to influence gait and foot function. We present long-term outcome examples demonstrating how targeted sensory input can support improved movement patterns over time.

We view the foot as a sensory organ that perceives the ground and sends information to the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS then coordinates muscular responses to create safe and efficient gait. Because walking is a learned skill—not an innate one—children who face developmental challenges may adopt less efficient movement patterns. During key developmental stages, sensomotoric foot orthoses can act as a tool to guide improved foot function and, in turn, better overall movement. Sensomotoric orthoses integrate well with other therapeutic interventions that focus on functional learning and long-term outcomes.
