Pedorthics – Adding Value to the Australian Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)

Pedorthics – Adding Value to the Australian Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)

September 12 @ 11:00
11:00 — 11:20

Q: What does a Physiotherapist, a Podiatrist and an Orthopaedic Surgeon have in common?
A: None of these health professionals thought to refer their mutual patient with footwear issues directly to a Pedorthist!

Despite Pedorthics being well-established in Australia, there are still members of the Medical and Allied Health team that are unaware of the value our profession can contribute to complex biomechanical cases. A 58-year-old female with Fibula Hemimelia has had a life-long struggle with finding footwear that fit her asymmetrical sized feet and that accommodates her leg length difference. Despite buying split-sized footwear and sourcing midsole additions for her leg length differential, her outcomes had been varied and experiences disappointing and inconsistent. With a thorough Pedorthic assessment and clear treatment plan communicated to all members of the multi-disciplinary team, this patient has had an improved outcome. Members of the MDT now also understand the unique, detailed perspective a Pedorthist can provide their patient.

This case demonstrates the importance of strengthening ties between professions and promoting the benefit of Pedorthic intervention to our MDT colleagues.
