Designing for the Nervous System: A Review of Texture, Foot Orthoses, and Motor Control
Foot orthoses have traditionally been viewed through a biomechanical lens, with emphasis placed on alignment, loading, and structural support. However, the plantar surface of the foot is also a rich sensory interface that contributes meaningfully to neuromuscular control during standing and walking. This plenary session will review the role of plantar cutaneous feedback in movement regulation and explore how this knowledge can inform the design and manufacture of foot orthoses.
Drawing on findings from doctoral and postdoctoral research, as well as the broader scientific literature, this session will examine the current evidence surrounding textured foot orthoses. Particular attention will be given to how texture may influence sensory input, motor output, gait control, and balance-related outcomes. The session will conclude with a practical “state of the union” discussion on textured foot orthoses, including what is currently supported by evidence, where uncertainty remains, and how clinicians and manufacturers might think critically about incorporating texture into orthotic design.

Dr. Kelly Robb is the Director of Product and Innovation at The Kintec Group and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education at Wilfrid Laurier University. She completed her PhD at Wilfrid Laurier University, specializing in the relationship between mechanoreceptor facilitation, lower limb muscle activity, and foot orthotic interventions.
For the past decade, Kelly has worked extensively within the academic sector, contributing to the advancement of research in the foot orthotic industry. Her recent publications in leading peer‑reviewed journals have established her as an international authority on the neurophysiological effects of textured foot orthoses during human locomotion. Her research continues to evolve on uncovering the mechanisms underlying orthotic effectiveness, with the long‑term goal of enhancing clinical practice and strengthening evidence‑based treatment for foot care professionals.
Since assuming her leadership role at Kintec, Kelly has leveraged her passion for academic excellence and clinical education to support the company’s internal clinical development, ensuring that research‑driven knowledge directly informs improved patient care.
Dr. Robb is currently the chair-elect for the Parkinson’s Society of Southwestern Ontario Board of Directors, a past president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada, a successful recipient of Canadian Tri‑Council research funding, and a two‑term member of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Research Ethics Board. She currently teaches in Western University’s Pedorthic Diploma Program and serves as a sessional instructor in Biomechanics at several Ontario universities.
