Workshop 3 – Clinical Reasoning
A 15 year old boy with Spina Bifida complains that he gets very tired after 200 meters walking. He lives at a farm and has to help as his brothers and sisters.
Based on physical examination (is given) and gait (videos) you have to answer next questions and we will discuss all different items.
Describe his gait and the external joint moments of ankle and knee.
- Identify the gait problems.
- Identify the main biomechanical problem.
- What aspect of the biomechanical problem can you influence?
- What is your solution?
- Which points of attention needs your solution?

Klaas Postema is a retired professor in Rehabilitation Medicine at the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands. His first contacts with pedorthics was in 1977. He became interested in the topic and never lost that. Next to pedorthics his interests are into gait analysis with the biomechanics of gait, orthotics and prosthetics. He is author of more than 130 articles and edited two books about pedorthics. The last one is: "Pedorthic footwear; Assessment and treatment”, in which different Australian pedorthists contributed.
