Session 3 – Friday
Pedorthic Footwear Or Surgery? – Where is the line? (20min)
A 72-year-old lady is faced with the prospect of significant orthopaedic surgery or the use of pedorthic footwear. This case study explores the pros and cons of conservative vs. surgical options. A severe adult-acquired flat foot deformity has led to the dislocation of the tibia over the talus. While on the waiting list through the public system, the patient’s podiatrist referred for a Pedorthic opinion. The solution may have delayed the surgery in the short term or indefinitely.

The cavovarus foot is a condition characterised by a high arch (cavus foot) and an outward tilt of the ankle (varus tilt), as indicated by its name. It is frequently associated with neurological disorders, occurring in 67% of such cases. This condition often results in excessive loading on the lateral border of the foot and muscle imbalance, leading to an abnormal gait. This case presentation will examine how pedorthic interventions, including shoe modifications, sensorimotor orthoses, and custom-made pedorthic boots, can positively impact this condition.
